La Sera is the project of Los Angeles based musicians Katy Goodman and Todd Wisenbaker. After touring behind their 2016 full length Music For Listening To Music To, the duo hit the recording studio to rerecord some songs. Being inspired by the recording process, Goodman and Wisenbaker recorded two new songs which became part of their new EP Queens. Josh Farrow’s debut album, Trouble Walks With Me comes out this Friday (10/28). Born and raised in Illinois, Farrow moved to Nashville in his early 20’s to chase after his future wife. There he met producer Dexter Green, who produced the album. Hiss Golden Messenger latest release, Heart Like A Levee pears into M.C. Taylor’s mind as he takes stock of his universe. He started writing the record in a Washington D.C. hotel room during a powerful winter storm. At this particular point in time, Taylor was wrenched apart by his responsibilities to his family and his music. He had recently quit his latest dead end job to experience the world with his children, but he quickly faced the pressures of paying monthly bills. The only way he could provide for his family was to hit the road for another tour. It presented a new level of guilt for Taylor, which is why in this Washington D.C. hotel room he forgot his family and music could not coincide without the other. Being sick and tired of all the concert rules, Todd Snider created his alter ego Elmo Buzz and his backing band Eastside Bulldogs several years ago. This gave him the freedom to play more concerts at home, but now Todd is slapping his real name in front of the band. The lead single from the album, “Ways And Means” was improvised during a pair of live recording sessions at a Nashville-area music academy. Just like during his live performances, Todd confidently rambles his way through the song until it’s over. The husband wife duo Shovels & Rope is back with their fifth studio release Little Seeds October 7th. Recorded in their South Carolina home studio, Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent wrote all the songs and played every instrument. The majority of the albums lyrics were cultivated from the duo’s own experiences and observations, addressing topics of over-medication of children, Alzheimer’s disease and racial unity. It’s been five years since Blind Pilot have released an album, but for frontman Israel Nebeker it might as well been a lifetime. In the blink of an eye Nebeker lost his closest group of friends, his 13 year relationship ended and his dad was diagnosed with cancer. He moved back home to help his family with his fathers sickness and eventual death. Los Angeles based Warpaint is set to release their third album, Heads Up this Friday (9/23). With all the members focusing more on solo projects, each member was allowed the space, freedom and creativity to write songs on their own. Actually their was only four or five times the whole band was in the recording studio together. This contributed to looser vibes and reduced the creative pressures of making a record. Our first and only glimpse of the album before it’s released is “New Song,” which is a departure from the band’s melancholy sound. But Jenny Lee Lindberg wrote the song after playing a game where each member of the band was tasked with writing a tune immediately after hearing another song. Her choice was Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” “I love Nile Rodgers – I love his style,” Lindberg says. “That song made me really happy, so I was like, ‘Okay, well, I’m going to try and put a little Nile Rodgers feel to it.’ His part is like a rhythm guitar, but I’m playing it on the bass. I got a disco beat playing. Chicago musician Andrew Bird changed his songwriting process on his tenth solo album, Are You Serious. Instead of writing imaginative lyrics in the third person, Bird wrote about personal experiences in the first person. As a result, there is less wordplay but as he says, “Who has time for poetics while grappling with birth and death?” The center piece of the album is “Roma Fade.” A song about the first few times Bird saw his wife at a party, and the longing he had to meet her. “‘Roma Fade’ present both sides of the phenomenon of observing and being observed.
