The War On Drugs – WTTS Christmas Can Concert – 2017
The WTTS Can Concert holiday tradition continued this year with two great shows to benefit families in need. This year we brought Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness to The Bluebird in Bloomington (see a re-cap here), and then, on December 21st, WTTS brought another great benefit concert to The Vogue to make the holidays even happier. The 2nd Christmas Can Concert starred The War On Drugs, and their L.A. based electronic opening act Lo Moon. Prior to the show, Lo Moon played an exclusive private performance for some of our lucky listeners in Sun King Studio 92 that can be heard here. The sold out Can Concert was sponsored by Sun King Brewery, and City Barbeque. Below you can see a few of our favorite flickr album images.

Korbin
Known as a friendly, happy and tolerant dog, Korbin is a six year old Great Dane, Labrador Retriever mix. He has been attending training classes at Paws & Play Dog Resort & Training Facility and is a rock star student! Going on car rides and playing tug of war are two of his favorite activates. Keylah
Keylah is a four year old Terrier, Pit Bull mix with a cocoa and white coat. Playing outdoors in the sunshine is her favorite activity and she has plenty of energy to play all day. She can be shy when meeting new people, but it doesn’t take long to warm up to them. She knows the commands (Sit, shake, down, come, roll over) and enjoys children! Trip
Trip is a two year old Boxer, Terrier mix who suffers from anxiety. Just as with many people who deal with anxiety, Trip is not a dog who will thrive around strangers or in unfamiliar settings, especially when they encroach upon his space without invitation. Trip will let you know when he’s not comfortable. Even though he is eight years old and 86 pounds, you’ll always find Ty bouncing around the yard. With a lovely golden blond coat, HSHC believes he is a blend of Retriever and Shepherd. Cain is a seven year old Terrier, Pit Bull mix who LOVES people! He constantly gives out kisses which has earned him the nickname Luv-Bug. Because of his high I.Q., Cain knows how to sit, come, shake, leave it, stay, down and even fist bump. Garcia
Six year old Garcia is a 62 pound Terrier, American Pit Bull mix. He is extremely playful and can get super excited when playing with tennis balls. Garcia loves people, napping on your chest and going on car rides. Gordy may look a little rough around the edges, but this eleven-year-old brown Tabby is a true gentleman. He arrived to HSHC last year in bad shape but with love and attention, he is now thankfully healthy. Jazzy
Domestic Medium Hair mix Jazzy is a loving 14 year old who is a wonderful companion for watching TV or enjoying a good book. Unfortunately, she has been fully declawed which will require extra love and care from her new owner. With all the love you’ll receive from Jazzy, it will be well worth the extra attention. Reginald

Aubrey is nine years old and seven pounds Domestic Short Hair mix. She has been fully declawed and suffers from an autoimmune disease that can be treated with daily medication. 15 year old Galileo is looking for a forever home to live out his golden years. He needs someone to take extra care of him as he is diabetic and gets insulin shots every day. Cadence is a lover who is ready to receive affection the minute you open the door. Since she came to HSHC off the streets, they are not sure who old she is but believe she is nine. Cadence is a wonderful brown and white tabby who’s ready to find her forever home!

WTTS Christmas Can Concert – 2017
It’s the return of the WTTS Christmas Can Concert! This year we brought Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness to the Bluebird in Bloomington to help families in need (see a re-cap here), and on December 21st WTTS is bringing another great benefit concert to The Vogue to make the holidays even happier. The 2nd Christmas Can Concert stars The War On Drugs, and their L.A. based electronic opening act Lo Moon. Tickets for that show have sold out but VIP’s have a chance at a free pair by registering in the VIP Room. This exclusive show is sponsored by Sun King Brewery, and City Barbeque.
To help out Food Rescue’s mission to help fight school food waste stop by City Barbeque through December 21st and drop off non-perishable and canned items at any of their five locations and while you are there sip a pint of Sun King’s Sunlight Cream Ale to donate a dollar to Food Rescue.
Then, when you come to the show, bring a sack of non-perishable canned goods. You’ll be helping out neighbors in need this holiday. A portion of proceeds will also benefit Food Rescue.
About Food Rescue: The K-12 Food Rescue Program in 350 schools addresses the estimated 1 billion Unwanted, Unpeeled, and Unwrapped food items wasted annually in America, and simultaneously engages students to lead us out of the mess through their Student Leader Entrepreneurial Initiative, or S.L.E.I. for short. Leon Bridges Interview & Concert Recap
On a chilly Sunday night, December 6th, the second WTTS Christmas Can Concert took place at the Bluebird in Bloomington. Fort Worth R&B and soul artist Leon Bridges took the stage for a sold-out show. There is no need to say that he won over the hearts of the audience because it was obvious throughout the evening that he already had reached each and every one of them.
Leon Bridges is a classic old soul in a young man’s body. The 26-year-old’s gospel roots so very clearly influence his soulful music, reminiscent of the greats like Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding. Bridges is still on the rise as he signed with Columbia Records in 2014 after having played open-mic shows around Fort Worth for some time. DJ Spikes, a local Bloomington DJ playing vintage soul and R&B records, performed a set before Bridges took the stage. WTTS DJ Rob Humphrey introduced Leon Bridges and his band, all of whom had just come from performing on NBC’s Saturday Night Live the previous evening.
The band enters dressed very professionally with somewhat of a vintage twist that creates the mood of a 1960s R&B performance. Bridges enters and looks exactly the way he sounds. From his modern-day conk haircut to his mustard tweed suit, Leon Bridges looked quite perfect on the small club stage. The sweetest of sounds boomed throughout the Bluebird that night.
Spoken like a true gentleman, his first words to the audience were “Nice to meet you.” His 7-piece band included himself and one other vocalist, a saxophone, guitar, bass, drums, and organ. Bridges took time out of the show to introduce all the band members and was sure to add compliments or a quick story of their meeting. Bridges admittedly played many songs from his album, “Coming Home” (released in June 2015) and added some new music into the mix, too.
Leon Bridges’ sound is so much more than the “soul” or “R&B” label; It’s fresh but it’s authentic, and it’s the perfect meeting of yesterday and tomorrow. If you’ve heard his vintage voice, then you know that it is effortlessly like butter. His vocal runs and exquisite vintage dance moves transport you to an entirely different place and time and it is a pleasure to be transported there. If you haven’t heard his voice…get to it.
Highlights of the night included “Better Man,” “Smooth Sailing,” “Twistin’ & Groovin’,” “Coming Home,” and “Lisa Sawyer.” He gave small introductions to many of the songs. “Twistin’ & Groovin’” was written about the night his grandfather met his grandmother. “Lisa Sawyer” was written for his mother. “Smooth Sailing” got a different kind of introduction in the form of a drum solo and the crowd really got moving. Bridges closed the set with an intimate performance of “River” in which he played electric guitar alone with his backing vocalist.
After the crowd chanted “Leon, Leon, Leon,” the guitarist enters the stage and the rest of the band gradually joins him for a three-song encore of new music. These included “Pussyfootin’,” an instantly classic love song, and “Mississippi Kisses.” “Mississippi Kisses” is an utterly groovy song that brings to mind Wilbert Harrison’s 1959 recording of “Kansas City.” During “Mississippi Kissses” Bridges instructs different parts of the crowd to go crazy in sections, and then in unison as he addresses them as “Indiana”; They did indeed go crazy for the Southern charmer for the final time that evening. Leon Bridges warmed the hearts of WTTS listeners on a chilly December evening, but that definitely won’t be the last you see of him.
