John Hiatt performed at bygone Indianapolis venues such as Loaves and Fishes on Indiana Avenue and the Hummingbird Cafe on Talbott Street. Photo provided by New West Records
John Hiatt, who grew up in Indianapolis near the intersection of 57th Street and Central Avenue, didn’t work in isolation during the pandemic.
Known for signature songs “Have a Little Faith in Me” and “Real Fine Love,” Hiatt will release a collaborative album with the Jerry Douglas Band this spring.
The album, titled “Leftover Feelings,” is scheduled for release May 21. The project’s first single, “All the Lilacs in Ohio,” arrived Wednesday. Douglas applies his unparalleled dobro guitar skills to the unplugged rendition of “Lilacs,” a song Hiatt originally recorded for his 2001 album “The Tiki Bar is Open.”
Hiatt, who received the Americana Music Association’s lifetime achievement award for songwriting in 2008 and became a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer the same year, dipped into his catalog for one other “Leftover Feelings” track. The song “Little Goodnight” first appeared as a B-side after Hiatt issued his “Perfectly Good Guitar” album in 1993.
Douglas, known for his work with Alison Krauss & Union Station, and his supporting cast joined Hiatt at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio B to record “Leftover Feelings.” Presently operated by the non-profit Country Music Hall of Fame, RCA Studio B was the site of recordings sessions by Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers and Chet Atkins.
“Leftover Feelings” will be Hiatt’s first studio recording since 2018’s “The Eclipse Sessions.” His resume includes many compositions that other artists popularized, including Bonnie Raitt’s cover of Hiatt’s “Thing Called Love” and the Jeff Healey Band’s rendition of “Angel Eyes.”

Nothing evokes passion and emotion like music, especially music that has been a part of the soundtrack of our lives. These songs that we love from our favorite artists are like snapshots in our family photo album. Each one provides clues to our history, our tragedies, our triumphs and our loves. Music bonds us as a community. And when one of the contributors to our life’s soundtrack dies, we lose a piece of ourselves, a friend who has been “through it all” with us. The heartbreak is shared and the feeling of our own mortality is real. This past year as we have experienced the loss of many in our musical family, I feel strengthened by our shared grief and expression of gratitude. I ask to find comfort together in the music they created for us and remember those times in our lives punctuated in song.
Here’s to a brand new year, brand new music and brand new memories.

“I think a lot of my favorite artists have always done stuff like that,” Deer Tick front man John McCauley says from his home in Nashville, reflecting on his band’s love of unexpected mashups: tender lyrics layered over pi**ed off guitars; classical music flourishes delivered nearly naked and high. Deer Tick’s perfected it all, mostly as an outlier, revered by a legion of fans, respected by peers, but not part of any one scene. With their highly anticipated new project(s), two new albums released simultaneously titled Deer Tick Vol. 1 and Deer Tick Vol. 2, the crew from Rhode Island prove that their punk-roots rock has only gotten better with age. Download “Jumpstarting” off Deer Tick vol. 2 any time between August 14th, and August 20th and learn more about Deer Tick at their Official Website, “Like” them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

Ty Segall will release his second self-titled album Friday. “‘Orange Color Queen’ is a love song for my girlfriend, Denée,” Segall says. “I’ve written her many, but I think this is my favorite. I travel around the world for a living and have developed a slight fear of flying. She’s one of the things that makes it better for me to travel. Especially when she is with me. She has orange hair, and is my orange color queen. I rarely write songs like this, because it is so easy to sound disingenuous, but I think this one is pretty good.” Download “Orange Color Queen” off Ty Segall and learn more about Ty Segall at his Official Website, “Like” him on Facebook and follow him on Twitter.
