Prayers and thoughts to his family, especially wife and young child.
It's crazy how a complete stranger can feel like a friend.

I’m so shocked and tears are
coming down my face listening to Hallelujah and thinking
What?? Phil is gone? I was just talking to my
husband about Phil the listener the other night about what a cool job
he has!! Thanks WTTS for giving him his own show and for us
lucky ones like me that enjoyed his show. Phil you will be
missed! I wish love and
kindness for his family during this really hard time.
-Lisa
Rose
Big BIG hugs!! Good vibes to
the crew and his family. I have always enjoyed the first Monday of the
month and Phil's basement cut feel of a show. I loved it. I feel like I
"know" all the DJ's at wtts. It was so cool to know that someone like
me ended up bothering you all so much that he got his own show. How
freaking cool is that? WAY COOL!! What ever the circumstances
were, I send all my love and good energy to his family so that they may have strength. I will keep listening and so
will Phil. Continue to make him proud to be a part of wtts.
-Erika
I will miss Phil. I loved
waiting to hear what he had to say and play - he and I were on the same
wavelength musically. And, now I see we were born the same year. Thanks
for sharing him with us.
-Gloria
Wow, shocking. I loved his
monthly show, and he was always a very nice guy to chat with at the
Music Mill. A wealth of musical knowledge and experiences, he will be
missed.
-Terry
I am sad
that Phil is no longer with us. We truly appreciated his
off-beat character and always enlightening us on not only, up and
coming artists, but also off-beat works of well-known acts.
-Dan
and Stacy Bettner
Anyone that had pleasure of seeing
Phil at a WTTS event knows what a vibrant part of the WTTS
family he had become. "We can allow the events of
life to crush us or shape us, the choice is ours."
Phil had obviously shaped many lives at WTTS and across it's listening
audience.
-Lisa
Im sitting at
my desk here in Lexington ky
Listening to
your program through your website
And just heard
the news of Mr. Stoerck
Im very sad and
reflective
Ive always been
envious of those who “live the dream”
Ive always been
envious of Phil The Listener
Thanks for
letting Phil be Phil
-Rob
I was shocked when I went to your website
today and saw the memorial to Phil. I never met him, or spoke
with him, but as a faithful listener of WTTS, I certainly knew his
show. The concept of a listener-DJ'd show fascinated
me. What a knowledgeable man and what a loss.
Please pass my thoughts along to Phil's family and friends.
-June
I’m am so shocked and saddened
by this. He was just a joy to listen to – and he will be
remembered for a long time. Please convey my condolences to
his family – and all of you. He was a great man.
-Lillian
I just
wanted to express my condolances at the sudden loss
of Phil. I have never seen a man with such a passion
and knowledge of music like Phil. He lived for the
chances to share his love for music with the listeners of WTTS
and he will be truly missed. Please send my thoughts and
prayers to Phil's wife and family. His
show introduced me to lots of good music
that kept me going through the ups and Downs of life and I will always
be grateful for that.
-Alan
What a
wonderful and touching tribute to Phil the Listener. I am deeply
saddened at the loss of such a wonderful man. His passion for music
showed deeply shown in each of his programs. My condolences to Phil’s
family and all of you at WTTS who are mourning his loss. I am
sure that Phil would be touched by your tribute as he gently
“sails off into the mystic.”
-Terrie Keen
I am so
sorry to hear of the loss of one of your family. I know Phil was a one
of a kind, just as I know each one of you are and I haven't met any of
you. Your thoughtfulness, compassion and sense of fun radiates through
each one of your voices as I listen to you on the radio. Please, each
one of you, continue to be a blessing as you walk this planet. God
Bless.
-Pamela
I think
I only missed two of Phil's shows and I hated missing them. I loved his
show and feel a great loss at this news. I will miss looking forward to
his shows. Many many fond memories, Good bye Phil.
-Pat
I was driving at lunch today
when I heard the news. I was so stunned, I got chills and was
in tears. I remember when Phil was first given the
opportunity to have his own show. I didn’t get to hear his
show because of the time, but I heard him call in over the years and
report on new music and give a critique of the latest concert he
attended. He had such a great energy about him and a
wonderful voice. I think going off mike and playing music was
the right choice. I especially liked your first selection,
hallelujah. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you and
his family. I know you will miss him.
-Sheila
May you walk beside music that has filled
our ears for so many Mondays. You
have blessed us with your open mind and taught us to listen... be at
peace Phil. Bonnie and Reed.. you are in my prayers. He must
have been a wonderful husband and father and you shall always have that.
-Kate
We met Phil when he helped bring
KT Tunstall to Indy for the first time. At the concert, my wife and I
had no idea who he was but his enthusiasm was infectious so we started
talking to him. We discovered we did “know” him through the radio. He
stood for everything that’s good in “listener supported radio.” It’s so
sad, in this day and age, he was one of a kind and now he too is gone.
-Steve
I always looked
forward to listening to Phil on his first Monday of the month show even
if it was only for a few minutes. His love of music was evident. He
will truly be missed by so many of us. The musical tribute was very
appropriate, almost too much for listening to in the office. My deepest
sympathies to his family and to all of you. I am sure that this is
incredibly hard for all of you.
-Lorraine
I just
heard the news on the radio - I am shocked and so sad to hear of Phil's
passing. I didnt know him personally but his commentary and
show always made me smile. My favorite radio moment of his
was when he "translating" the ridiculous interview of Paolo
Nutini. That interview was hilarious and Phil's translations
were cracking me up. I'll miss his personality and my
thoughts and condolences are with his family and your
radio family.
-Shey
I was
very saddened to receive the news about Phil's death. Phil and I
attended several concerts and shared many beers together over the last
few years. I will miss his friendship, and the opportunities
to share life's gift of music. May his spirit live on in every song
that fills our hearts with good feelings. My thoughts and prayers go
out to his family.
-Scott
WOW…..I don’t
think I ever understood what Phil was trying to do nor did I really
like the music that he played. On Mondays, I would be working around
the house on Highway 446 in Bloomington an as always, flip on the
radio. It’s always on WTTS. I would say its been set for about 20 or so
years and I seldom change it, But I must say I was envious of what Phil
was doing and how an average guy could command the Power Ship of WTTS
on Mondays made me giggle and I respected that. What a wonderful
opportunity you gave this guy. Tell his family that he brought me many
hours of entertainment along with hours of wondering why he way doing
what he was doing. I never met him but I did connect with that
wonderful man. Sorry for the lose and my heart burns for you all and
his family. As always… my
cars and radios are dedicated to WTTS their DJs. There will
be no other Phil... only imatations.
-Steve
Shocked is not the even the
word. Phil was a “Fixture”…. His energy and inspiration as representing
not only the beauty of the relationship between listener, artist, and
media outlet but also truly what it means to be a fan. I will sorely
miss his input and inspiration coming over the air. I was and am a
“Phil” fan. Condolences, hopes and prayers to his family.
-Ronald
I'm in
tears. I've never met Phil...sharing his music
choices led me to know him...he reached me with his
music. I liked the sound of his voice too. Phil's giving and
sharing to your staff and us listeners are gifts that last.
Music can touch people deeply and Phil's did that. Thanks,
Phil.
-bb
I worked with Phil during his
"day job". He was a wonderful mentor, friend, and source of
great humor. All of us in the office are shocked
to hear of his passing, and are deeply saddened. On behaf of
his "office family" We'd like to pay tribute to Phil and
recognize his ability to make us realize how precious life and
friendships are. God bless you, Phil and your
family. And God bless to all of you at WTTS for allowing him
to make the most of his love for music.
-Megan
Unbelievable loss to
the local radio scene! Phil's show was always a monthly
highlight because of the amazing mix of eclectic music he loved and
played. Phil was like Everyman to the other listeners out
there...Everyman with really great taste. Peace, Phil!
-Bob
Please accept my condolences on
the death of Phil. I loved his show and always
thought it was cool that you guys gave him a chance to have his own
show. I will miss hearing him - a faithful listener just like
myself. Rock on.
-Julie
My condolences to Phil's
friends and family. I always looked forward to his
show. He turned me on to a lot of great music and seemed like
a nice guy. It was shocking to hear of his passing, but that
was a nice tribute today as well. I hope you can play "Always
Love" by Nada Surf sometime, it was one of the many songs I learned
about and grew to love from Phil.
-Dan
I just found out
about Phil and like most everyone else I am shocked and saddened. I
never met him in person but had several phone conversations with him
after I loaned him some Billy Thorpe CDs to play on his program
following Thorpe's passing. He will be missed.
-Keith
Phil will be
missed. His Show was the best. I enjoyed it when he called in also.
I am thankful
that WTTS gave him a show and we were able to enjoy his great taste in
music. I will say a prayer for his family
-John
I just wanted to say that I am
so terribly sorry that Phil is no longer with us. Please send my
condolences to his family.
-Corina
Kindhearted, funny,
inspirational, lovable, sweet.... the list goes on. He has a special
place in my heart as he does with many many other people whose lives he
has touched. He was a truly amazing man that will be
remembered forever.
-BG
I would like to send heartfelt
wishes to Phil's family. I considered him somewhat of a pioneer...just
a regular guy who loved music and knew music. WTTS recognized this and
put him right where he belonged...on the radio so he could share his
passion with other "listeners."
-Janet
I am moved to tears....my heart
and prayers go out to Phil's wife and family. I
love Phil the Listener, he was on it and was not afraid to play way out
stuff. Whew .....things change so
quickly. I am stunned!
-Stellaluna
As I was driving on 65 this
afternoon, at 2:00 when you came on to tell us that Phil had passed
away, I nearly wrecked, I was crying so hard. I can remember
all those times he would always win the contests! Then, when
he started DJ'ing for free.....(he was so funny, he would always make a
point of it that he was doing it for free). My husband and I
attend many events that you guys sponsor, concerts, the Vintage Indiana
Wine Festival, etc. I think the first time I met Phil was at
the Wine Festival. I can't remember which one...we go every
year. Anyway, I introduced myself to him, he had just started
his "DJ'ing" just before that. I complimented him,
we talked for a few minutes, then he gave me a big hug. Well,
after that, anytime we were at any event and Phil was there, he would
always come up to me and give me a big hug......it didn't matter where
I was, he would always run into me. I miss him so much
already!!!! Ok, here's the weird part, yesterday,
obviously for some reason, Phil popped into my head.
I was thinking, I can't wait until 7 June for the Wine Festival so I
can see Phil again!!!!! I know that we will all have
the best reason in the world this
year at the Festival to have a toast and hold our glasses
high.......for Phil. Please convey to everyone at the
station, to Bonnie and Phil's entire family my warmest
thoughts and loudest prayers.
-Barbara
Thank you for sharing
the sad news about Phil's passing. I know it must be a hard
thing to accept that Phil is gone. He will be truly
missed for his input. I will keep all of you in my
prayers. Please express my condolences to Phil's family.
-Sandi
It is truly a
shock to hear the news of Phil’s passing. I for one enjoyed his taste
in today’s music and will always remember Phil when listening to some
of the many artists he brought to our attention. Phil’s family and
loved ones can be sure he will be remembered. RIP Phil.
-Doug
No
way. Phil and I first officially met during one of the early
“listener’s advisory panels” at the Rathskeller way back
when. I think shortly after that he began his on-air project
at WTTS. Ken and I could always count on seeing him at the
Music Mill – regardless of who was playing. How very sad.
-Karen
I was
shocked and saddened by the news of Phil's passing.
I've been a big fan of Phil's passion for music. I will miss
his stories, enthusiasm and great story - a true fan that got
to live his final years being a part of something that eventually
became a part of him. My deepest sympathy to his family.
-Jim
What an
unexpected and tragic death. It certainly comes as a
shock and brings with it much saddness in our household. We
wish to express our regards to his family in what will be a very trying
time. He touched many lives with his music
interperation and zany personality and was a unique
spirit. May they carry that with them as well as their own
private memo.
-Erin
Someone who can tell you what
they know and think about music – and a wide variety of it! – without
being annoying or pretentious is a rare find. For that person
to also be a regular ol’ listener like the rest of us was even
better. Peace and comfort and
hope to the family Phil loved, to the staff at WTTS whom he
clearly adored, and to the friends and listeners who will miss his
insights, his thoughts, and his laughter.
-Courtney
I've listened to you station
for so many years "Brave New World" was my favorite show in JR
high...and when Phil got the DJ gig i thought how cool thats something
that all listeners want....I will miss the show and wish is family my
deepest Sympathy...and know that death is not a punishmet..and allways
rember the good times...
-Sky
I am saddened by this
news. My thoughts and prayers go out to Phil's family and the
WTTS family. He had great taste in music and was always a
familiar, welcoming voice on WTTS since I can
remember. I am grateful for his contribution as Phil
the Listener. He will be sadly missed. Love
& Peace,
-Mary
I sat in the studio
with Phil once almost every month for about a year or so. In fact, when
his one-year anniversary came around, I could hardly believe it had been so long. Neither could Phil. I think he was surprised each month
that WTTS continued to let him play whatever he wanted. But he was
thrilled. Phil loved music. All kinds of music. And he always looked
for something unusual to put on the air. Heloved getting feedback from people, and loved getting their calls while
he was in the studio. He welcomed e-mail suggestions for the next
month's playlist. And he would go for months without repeating a
song. Phil was a very funny, nice guy, with an attitude that
was always sarcastic, but never mean. Although he was on only once a
month, I believe that with WTTS listeners, Phil was a star. He brought
something unique to radio, something rare in most radio markets these
days - personal taste. And he only did it because he loved music.
-Daniel
Wow, I
lost my breath when I read your email. I can only hope that
his family finds comfort in their memories of him. He was a
breath of fresh air. He enjoyed music so much and helped us
broaden our horizons.
-Ivey
I just
wanted to express my condolences regarding the passing of
Phil The Listener. He always played the coolest
stuff, and I remember him saying that he was on a mission to
never play the same song twice within a year, which I thought was
pretty awesome, and would have made his job challenging as well. Not
too many months ago I was on my way home from my sister's flipped
on the radio, and this kickASS song explodes out of my
stereo. I went "Damn! Where the hell did
this come from?! This rocks! Only on 92, man, only
on 92. Where'd they find this?" The song was over,
and Phil comes on and says it's from Doyle Bramhall's new CD and it's
called "Big." I smiled and shook my head.
Of course it came from Phil, I thought, he's a master at finding the
cool and lesser-known. Immediately upon getting home I bought that song
off of iTunes, and that, really, is how this whole music thing is
supposed to work. The song just finished playing on my computer during that last
sentence. I'm sure that Phil was responsible for turning a
lot of people on to music that otherwise might not have gotten the
hearing it deserved. I am glad to have had the opportunity to
hear is shows, and grateful for the staff at WTTS for making him a part
of your crew.
-Tom
Our most
heartfelt sympathy goes out to Phil’s family and loved ones.
We were shocked to hear of his passing. Phil added so much to
WTTS…in so many ways.
He will be
missed greatly but always loved!!
-Charlie & Kathy
I will
pray for his family. I will miss his eclectic mix and genuine love of
all music. He is probably listening and talking to the best musicians
that went before him (John Lennon, Jim Morrison, Elvis, George Harrison
and all the others!). Imagine the conversation with God about music!
God just needed a great DJ for his favorite station!
-Dan
I have
been in "communication" silence for the majority of the day . . . Wow,
I just heard your message about Phil the Listener. So, as I
return from a late lunch and tune in WTTS on my Phone/Walkman . . .
From all of us at White River State Park and The Lawn @ White River
State Park, we send our deepest sympathy to your staff and the rest of
the Phil the Listener Family. Interesting enough, I am privy to some
inside music biz info but not everything. So, I took Phil's
suggestions and raves of Gomez's "How We Operate" album and purchased
it. He was right on as usual . . . even though we had Gomez
grace the stage of The Lawn a few seasons ago . . . I waited for his
thoughts. Phil the Listener will always have a backstage pass for the
remainder of my tenure at The Lawn (If I have anything to do about
it). Hopefully, we will channel his musical insights this
season and beyond!
-Alex
Umlauf, The Lawn At White River State Park
Phil was
definitely more than a "listener". He was a student of popular music
and its artists, and I always enjoyed his show, which I would catch on
my work computer late on Monday nights. I too am shocked at his sudden
passing and extend my sympathies to his family and friends. He will
truly be missed.
-Marty
That
news really hurts, really. I never got a chance to meet Phil, but was
looking forward to the possibility of it. I REALLY enjoyed and was
always happy to catch his show once a month. The excitement on the days
his show aired was actually felt (by me) through the airwaves all day
before it came on. I really appreciated his immense,
well rounded knowledge of and enthusiasm for the good
music he always chose to play. I really appreciated him in a
very musical way, and I'm very musically PICKY. He
was excellent, and I truly hope he 'went' painlessly and peacefully.
The music world is lessened without him. My heart goes out to all that
knew personally him there at the station, and of course, to his family.
-Brad
I can't
believe the news today. I have been a long time fan of the "Phil the
Listener" show. Only lately did I get to meet Phil at the Newton
Faulkner concert a month or so ago. He was a man with such a wonderful
soul and a true love of music. What a loss for the WTTS community. My
thoughts are with all his friends and family.
-Katey
My name
is Cindy Gibson. I am from Noblesville and I am a loyal listener and I
enjoyed listening to Phil the Listeners shows. I also enjoyed Phil
picks. I found I shared in his taste in music. He will be
missed by me as well as so many others. I wish to send my deepest
sympathies to his wife and his son Reed.
-Cindy
Phil has
touched so many lives….and for a lifetime! Our thoughts and
prayers are with Bonnie, his son and family. He will be in
our memories forever!
-Kimberly
I have
been listening to WTTS since it became a progressive rock station and I
was a child. The two things that kept me with the station are the
quality and diversity of the music and the passion of the DJs. Phil was
the perfect example of a humane and spirited music fan. He genuinely
loved music and wanted to share that love with others. How beautiful
that he got an opportunity, even if it was too brief. I hope that I can
reflect some small portion of that love back to his colleagues and
associates; his family and loved ones are in my thoughts and prayers.
-Justin
I didn’t know Phil
personally. Sometimes, I didn’t even care for what he was
playing. What Phil did for me was to expand my listening
repertoire by sharing his vast knowledge on the air. Indeed,
I listened even when I didn’t like the track because Phil shared
information that allowed me to connect to music I did like.
He did this without fail. Thank you Phil, for letting me share some of
your knowledge. My heart reaches out to your friends and
family. If you touched my life the way you did, I can only
imagine how you touched theirs.
-Bill
I’ve been
intrigued with your station’s concept of allowing an ordinary listener
of WTTS to host a program. Now that I look through the photo
tribute, I envy Phil’s position! To meet some of the talented
artists Phil featured on his program must have been a thrill to
him. I hope that your listeners can rejoice in knowing that
he led an exciting life and seemed to enjoy life to the
fullest. Phil, thanks
for sharing your love of music with Central Indiana. You will
be missed.
-Nancy
"Phil
The Listener" brightened many a Monday night for music lovers all over.
His taste, grace and good humor brought an amazingly human touch to the
increasingly dull world of commercial broadcasting. (Of course, it
would take a great, independent station like WTTS to "brave" giving a
regular-guy-music-lover his own show!?!?) When a fellow listener
somehow convinced Phil to play a track of mine in 2006, a) it was an
incredible honor, and b) wouldn't you know it, it was sandwiched right
up against Warren Zevon, one of Phil's faves, and one of my early
songwriting inspirations! The only condolence in this sad time is: if
there's a rock and roll heaven, Warren and Phil are on their way to
becoming fast friends....
-Anonymous
I do not know Phil yet his voice and music
always made me smile. he played the best music of any station
around the US and had undoubtedly the best musical taste. I
love music and hate most regular music channels. he actually brought me
back from listening to CD's and Ipod only to listening to WTTS. He
played more then just music, he played his soul, his happiness and
wanted to share that with everyone. which truly is what music is about.
he was a musician of radio, of CD's. God bless his soul and
his family will be in my heart and prayers. Thank you Phil.
-Karissa
Just
wanted to drop a line and tell you I am sorry to hear of the passing of
Phil. I moved up to the Chicagoland area not too long ago but still
listen to WTTS on the computer. I wish you all well and will keep Phil
and his family in my prayers...
-Josh
He made
us laugh with his witty remarks
He
made the music bearable after dark
His
distinctive voice always told us we were in
to
the many facets that were totally him
His
choice of tunes let us know he was into it all
He
kept up with the buzz
So
Phil, we will miss you and all of your songs
I'm
sure heaven is waiting even if God was wrong
Your
time was fast and went by greatly
Thanks
for all you have done lately
To
your wife Bonnie please remember this...
No
matter the circumstance Phil's show I wouldn't miss
He
brought us so much joy
So
thank you so much for letting us have a piece of the man you loved so
much...
-Ashley
So very
sorry to have learned of the passing of Phil The Listener. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at WTTS and his wife
and son. He was like a member of the family.
-Jamie
I am so sorry to hear about Phil
the Listener. His idea for the show was fantastic and he had a great
wit. Always great fun to listen to. He will be so missed. Please pass
on my prayers and condolences to his family.
-BJ
I didn't know the
guy. Although we attended many of the same shows around Indy,
I never got the chance to meet him. But I always looked
forward to his monthly show on the air. Partly because of his
gregarious and down-to-earth charm, but also for his vast knowledge of
and well-honed taste in music. To think, a radio station that
still allowed the show's host to play CDs he brought in from
home! In the current state of radio, with corporate playlists
and the inflated influence of market research, it was refreshing and
even a bit of an adventure to listen to Phil host a show that didn't
concern itself with the latest trends or charting singles.
And I really liked his CD collection! Phil played music
simply because he liked it, and thought it needed to be shared with
others.
Even though I never got the chance to meet him, I feel like
I've lost a friend and kindred spirit. And he's gone too soon.
-Eric
Phil was an idol to
many of us baby-boomers. He knew all of the
cool stuff that we could only conjure up
collectively. He will be sorely missed. It sounds
as if he had a wonderful life. My sympathy to his family and
to all of his friends at WTTS.
-Tony
What a terrible loss for this
world. My thoughts and prayers to Phil's family and to all of
his TTS family. Phil's show of stellar music was
surely the highlight of the first Monday of the month. Phil's
great spirit, music genius and genuine
personality will be sadly missed forever. God
bless.
-Julie
I only heard Phil's show a couple of times, a long time ago, but I thought it was the coolest idea and I wish I could have tuned in more often. Although I didn't hear him regularly or know him personally, I'm very sad by his death. I'm sure I heard a commercial for his show just yesterday. My heart goes out to his friends and family. -Jean
I met PTL at an advisory panel meeting and he blew me away with his knowledge of music. He was such an unassuming guy who really knew his stuff. What a joy it was to run into him again at Radio Radio when Kyle Riabko was in town a few years ago. I could always count on Phil to tell me what cool new band would be coming to Indy next. May he continue to spin fabulous tunes in heaven. God bless his family.
-Sherry
I met Phil only once at last summer's birthday bash with Bob Dylan. I ended up having an extra ticket for the show, and Phil needed one for Bonnie. Tickets were going for over $200, so he was pleasantly surprised when I sold him mine for face value. I told him that I just couldn't deprive a fan of Bob's the chance to see the show just to make a buck. We had a nice chat about how scalpers ruin the concert-
going experience, then later Bonnie brought me a beer as thanks for the ticket. I am so glad I had a small part in a happy memory for the two of them. I was sad to learn that all music lovers lost a friend. My best to his friends and family.
-Chad
Phil was an inspiration to so many of us. He had a dream to become part of something he believed in- the WTTS family. He lived his dream, brought joy and happiness to so very many and proved that you can reach your dreams. Thank you for having the strength to share this wonderful man with us. He’ll be missed. Nuff said.
-Glen
I never had the chance to meet Phil...it seems every time I thought I'd won a contest...he was already on the air staking the claim....the man is the epitome of musical knowledge His show was an adventure and I'm sure more than a few white knuckles had been created, but in the end it was all worth it To me..a worthy send off to Phil would be one Monday night...nothing but his interviews..no music...just the nice tidbits of his wit and curiosity teeming with the insights of the artists he loved so much To borrow from Shawshank Redemption...."they can't take away the music that is on your head".. may Phil party with the dearly departed musicians of yore..
-Sam
I'm so sad to hear of Phil's passing. I love music and I loved his show. It was fun to listen to someone with so much passion for music. I send my sympathy to his family and I hope it helps to know that he made many Monday's better for me and I'm sure many others.
-Glenda
My heart fell to the floor when I heard the news. I've been listening to his show since 2004. I recorded many of his shows so I could listen to them while doing homework at IU. Since his first show, I knew we were music-mates because he played Wilco and brought out some Beatles. This is a terrible loss and my thoughts are with his family. He sounded like a wonderful, fun, and encouraging husband and father. The tribute show was perfect tonight, and I'm sure he was listening.
-SaraBeth
I met him 37 years ago, when he “owned” Valparaiso High School, the tech kid who got things done. He told his Dad to hire me at Valparaiso Camera Shop, where he taught me about photography and rock music at a time when nobody outside the New York metro area knew Lou Reed, the Stooges, Captain Beefheart and countless other sonic experiences that he ended up sharing with WTTS listeners. An incredible ear for music, no funnier jester, no better husband and father, no better friend. All the old Valpo gang will miss Phil. He made us what we are.
-Garrett
My condolences...never met Phil, but have loved his show since day one. I listened after work and on the way home...was just thinking this evening how much I wished his show was on tonight..get home and find the e-mail..A very sad day for music in Indy.
-Peggy
Sometimes only in death is it apparent how many lives we touch .. and I hope Phil knew how much we enjoyed his shows. The shock will wear off, the tears will subside, the music will live on and we will sing .. and smile when we remember Phil The Listener!
-Dan
I never really got to hear Phil much on the radio, but what I heard of him, I wished I would have been able to sit down and discuss music with him. I got a minor in Music at IU, but yet his knowledge and appreciation for music blew me away. He introduced me to so many bands I'm not a huge fan of, and I could never have explained to him how much I appreciated him opening my eyes to the real world of music. He taught me so many things about so many different styles of music, I'm forever indebted to him. I'm sad to hear he's gone. The music world is missing a patriarch of education. God bless him, his family, and everybody he touched in his short time on Earth.
-Matt
A tregedy & loss for his family, the station, and all of Indianapolis. Blessings to his family. Thank you for sharing the news via email. I am currently out of the country & may have not known if you didn't send the message. Thank you for keeping the 92.3 community connected.
-Elaine
When I first arrived in Indianapolis from Ithaca, NY 3 years ago, I had a hard time finding a radio station to stick with. After cruising the dial for almost a year I stumbled on WTTS. I tried it out for awhile as part of my regular rotation of stations until one night at work when I heard you guys play Driving With The Brakes on by Del Amitri. It's my absolute favorite song by them and I'd never heard it on the radio. I called the station and thanked the DJ for playing such a great song and commended him on his selection. He seemed genuinely pleased that someone else shared his taste and thanked ME for calling and listening to WTTS. I didn't know it at the time, but I was speaking with Phil The Listener and he convinced me that night to make WTTS my station. Any station that was cool enough to let the DJ play album cuts by an obscure one hit wonder (who just happen to actual be amazing songwriters) was alright with me. Since that night WTTS has introduced me to so much wonderful music, much of it through fills show. I've been to more WTTS sponsored shows since I've been to Indy than I can count. I'm not saying that I wouldn't have gotten into WTTS without Phil, but I know he hastened the process. Godspeed brother and thanks for sharing your love of good, honest music with the city that I've come to call home.
-Keith
There are some things you can replace, and others you can not……. My heart goes out to your family Phil, you will be missed.
-Nikki
I have always had a love of music. I have to have the radio on listening to "tunes" whenever I am driving. The first couple of times that I heard the commercials about Phil the Listener, I thought what is that all about? As I continued listening to WTTS both in my car and at the office, I started growing envious of Phil being able to take it to the next level and get directly involved with the music. He definitely had a knowledge and love of the different music groups. It must have been a blast for him to be able to introduce some of the groups that played over the years at the different venues. I never met Phil, but I know that I would have liked him just for the fact that several pictures of him show him as a fellow beer drinker. Music and beer, now that is what life is really all about!
-Scott
I have known Phil for many, many years, prior to "Phil the Listener", via a business relationship. We struck a chord early on with a common love for music and its roots. You may not know how much he loved what he was doing at TTS, but it made a grown man's dreams come true. Thank you for giving him that opportunity and letting the rest of us be a part of it. I will never forget a night at the Music Mill, a James McMurtry show, where my wife and I sat, talked, drank and had a blast with Phil. Thanks for the memories Phil!
-Phil
I was shocked to hear about the loss of Phil. My sympathies to the family. Phil was "one of us", just an average guy with a passion for music who loved WTTS. You will be missed.
-Kim
I’m an outside salesperson with The Office Mart in Fishers. I work mainly in the Shelby and Hancock county area. Phil was the guy that kept my lifeline to the “office” going. Phil was there if I needed some information for a quote, something special taken care of, or just for our usual Friday banter of reminding each other “it's Friday”. I’ll miss him greatly. We’ll all miss him. His family is in my prayers.
-Tony
What a great bunch of photos! Phil spread a lot of joy to you all and to the rest of us WTTS music enthusiasts. Godspeed Phil and prayers of comfort for your family and friends.
-MV
You move to a new town and then you're lucky to find that is has a unique radio station that plays your kind of music. You listen and live in the city long enough and you become part of the community. When a member of the community gets the chance to step forward and remind everyone what music is all about, joy, memories, good times, uniqueness, etc., you smile and rejoice as the 'little guy' wins for a change. Then you hear about his passing and you have this wave crash over you. Wait, this guy had a life and a family and they're really hurting now. Maybe the community can help lend a hand and the music can do what it does best, heal us and ease the hurt. Thoughts and prayers to his wife, son and all those that knew him. Hopefully at some point the music he seemed to love so much can lift us up.
-John
I was so sorry to hear of Phil Stoerck's death. What a loss for the station and a loss for us all. He was a great guy and fun to listen to. I know it must be very hard on all of you to have lost him as he was a part of your family. May Phil's own family and his WTTS family find comfort in your memories of him and may he find peace on the other side.
-Susan
I was very shocked to hear about Phil yesterday. I just received your email about him and felt compelled to send my condolences. I only met Phil once(Susan Tedeschi @ the Vouge April 2006)-but I could tell what a great guy he was! My heart goes out to all his family-at home and WTTS. God Speed Phil.
-Doug
I'm so sorry to hear about Phil the Listener. My heart goes out to his family. You can be sure he'll be jamming with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Warren Zevon and all the other musical greats who've passed before him. Rock on, Phil.
-Becky
We first met Phil during the Rock the Rackhouse promotion back in 2000 when we went down to the Jim Beam distillery courtesy of WTTS to see Kenny Wayne Shepherd. We had the pleasure of spending time with him over the years at numerous WTTS events. It wont be the same without him. Thanks for letting us get to know him.
-Bruce & Angie
I am saddened today to hear of the passing of Phil. He was a breath of fresh air for the listeners of music. I recall the first time I heard Phil, I had been out of state and was just getting back home on what must have been the first Monday of the month. I got into the range of WTTS and tuned my radio to it. A great song that was a deep deep album cut was playing, I thought, “leave it to TTS to play something like that.” Then this voice came on to talk about the artist, the cut, the album, and again I thought, “Wow, who is this guy? He doesn’t sound like a pro. And, I think that is good” As I drove on and listened, I concluded that Phil was just like me and thousands of others that listen to WTTS. The more I heard him the more thankful I was that he was having a conversation with us not simply talking at us. I am thankful for the gifts God gave Phil, I pray for strength and comfort for his family during these difficult days.
-David
So sad to here of Phil's passing. This can't be. My heart goes out to Bonnie and rest of his family. He was so young, a year younger than me. We never know.
But we DO know where Phil is, Rock and Roll Heaven. Just think who he's getting to meet now. You know he's loving every minute of it! Great, great guy he was just too good for us and there's a bigger plan for him.
-Claudette
I have only written to a radio station one time before - and that was to WTTS last Spring - but I just wanted to send my deepest regrets to Phil's family. You had a very special person who touched the lives of so many people. Phil was amazing. Someone with such a vast knowledge of music yet never spoke down to anyone when talking about the tunes he loved or the musicians to whom he listened. When I listened to Phil, I felt like I was sitting at the bar with him, chatting about music over an ice cold New Castle Pale Ale. Thank you Phil for sharing your knowledge and great music, and thank you WTTS for having the balls to recognize talent and put him on the air.
-Eric
As I was driving home last night I heard that "Phil the Listener" had passed away. I said out loud, "What?!" I never met him, but knew him only through the airwaves. Just know that you had a listener in me. I'm sure you're still rockin' out to your own set list and we'll still be listening. :)
-Stefanie
Every time I start to type this, I get choked up and don't finish it. I think it's because I feel much like everyone else here, in that I felt like I knew Phil. He was one of us, who had the opportunity to dive into his passion and share it with the world. I never met him but he seemed so personable, passionate and thoughtful. My sympathy goes out to Bonnie and Reed: Phil will not be forgotten.
-Kerri
Few people live their true dream. Many talk about what it would be like, few achieve - this is where Phil set himself apart from the crowd. His passion and enthusiasm for music and life has had a global effect. Phil, your zeal to share yourself with the world will not go in vain. Pease be with you and your family.
-Nick
I was so sorry to here about the passing of Phil. Music is personal and life driving, it is what everyday people use to feel, express and live their lives. I thank Phil so very much for having such a tangible love and knowledge of music. His obvious passion was something that he passed on to anyone who ever heard him speak. Thank you Phil.
-Kelly
Like many others, my husband and I are very sad to hear of Phil’s passing. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Phil’s family and his family at WTTS. He was definitely a treat for WTTS listeners everywhere.
-Sara
Phil always seemed so excited and happy about having his own show. Whenever I heard him on 92.3, it was obvious he had a true love for music, a rare passion. My sincere sympathy to his family and friends.
-Mary
I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of "Phil the Listener". My prayers go out to him & his family. I always loved listening to his show. He played my kind of music & had good commentary to go along with it. He will be deeply missed by all the "WTTS Listeners". God bless him & his family!
-Rick
I have been a BIG fan of WTTS and was thrilled that you gave a regular guy that loved music a chance to express himself. He had a great voice for radio and I enjoyed his music selections. His enthusiasm was admired. I am very sad and send my deepest sympathy to his friends and family.
-Susan
I was certainly shocked to hear about the loss of Phil! He had grown to become such a staple of WTTS radio and the local music scene. My prayers are with his family and friends! Tuning in on the first Monday night of the month will not be the same for quite a while! Farewell my radio friend… He will be missed!
-Dave
We were fortunate enough to meet Phil and enjoy a conversation with him at The Bluebird one night. Even though we only spoke with him briefly, it was very obvious to us that Phil possessed a warm heart and a fun-loving spirit. He took great pride in his show and the opportunity he had to play uncommon tunes for his listeners. We will be forever grateful to the opportunity he gave us. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. May you all find peace in this extremely difficult time. And to Phil, thank you for your devotion and passion to music. We hope you get to enjoy it as much in the afterlife as you did in this one.
-Jennifer with Shaggy Wonda
I met Phil at The Music Mill, which I believe was Phil's second home. At that time, he was 'Phil the Listener' to me and I was honored to meet him and told him so. Through many such encounters, Phil became a good friend and was so much more to me than just 'Phil the Listener'. To me, Phil was the consumate nice guy - the guy who always had a pleasant word. Phil was the guy who always saved a seat for me at his table at whatever venue we attended, be it The 'Mill' (as Phil always called it), The Vogue, or Radio Radio. Phil was the guy who was always grateful for the photos that I took of the events we attended and especially for the ones of he and his family. Phil was the guy who posted the pictures I took of him on his MySpace. Phil was the loving husband who always proudly introduced his wife Bonnie to anyone he met before he did anything else. Phil was the friend that I could always count on. Phil always made me smile. You will be missed - deeply - my friend. I hope God has a spot for you on His radio station and that in heaven, the beer is always cold and free.
-Joel
I am also shocked and saddened by the news of Phil’s passing. When WTTS first introduced the concept of a listener hosting a program, I thought it was a great idea – and Phil was perfect for the job. He will be greatly missed by his fellow listeners. My heart goes out to his family and friends and they will be included in my prayers.
-Cheri
I am very saddened by the loss of Phil for his family, his friends, and the radio station. Thank you for sending this email and please send out another when details are available to help his family. Once again, I am reminded of how cool your radio station is.
-Ed
I just want to send my condolences to Phil's family. I always thought it was so cool that your station would let someone have his own show like Phil did. He really knew his music. He will be my thoughts and prayers. He will be sadly missed by me and thousands of other listeners.
-Mike
Whew- I'm sitting in my office in SanFran and am shocked to hear the news about Phil. Just this past weekend while driving in Indy I heard a commercial with Phil and I thought, "Man, I need to remember to catch his show on Monday's when I'm back in town". What a cool guy, what a cool program he had and what a cool thing to do to give him his own show. There is only one Phil, but I hope TTS continues the tradition. -Goodbye, Phil. I was a big fan.
-Kelly
"I'm Phil. Phil The Listener". . . I would listen to Phil. His shows, his commercials. He had a phenomenal grasp of classic rock music and seemed to be the embodiment of WTTS and it's fans. I will miss him.
-Hank
I was quite shocked and saddened when I logged on to the WTTS website and saw that Phil the Listener had passed away. I did not have the chance to listen to his show often but on those nights I was working late, Phil’s music, and discussion, were a great lift to a long work day. Thanks WTTS for allowing Phil the air time. My deepest sympathies to his family during their time of grieving and loss.
- Matt
Phil’s uncanny blend of music and memories will live in our hearts forever, and hopefully, that will be enough. His songs would literally stop me in my tracks, no matter what I was doing. And I stopped in my tracks last night, too, when I heard the sad message after “Hallelujah.” Peace and blessings to Bonnie and Reed, and overwhelming thanks for sharing this great man with us. And in reverence and respect to the “One and Only Phil the Listener” . . . thank you for the spirit of it all.
-Cheryl Ann
Sorry to hear about Phil. I tried to catch his show whenever I could and enjoyed his dry sense of humor and ability to stay up on the current music scene. It made me feel good that someone with such passion about music found his way to success with WTTS -- that is a tribute to WTTS because only WTTS would have taken such a chance.
-Greg
I don’t have much in the way of memories of Phil, but it is clear that the man loved music and his family. From the pictures, he clearly loved life. There aren’t too many people in this world like that, and I am sure he will be missed. Maybe I missed not knowing him; but I know that for every person whose lives he touched, a little bit of him will live on in those people .
-Bob
I am so sorry to hear about he passing of your friend and associate Phil Stoerck. I know he was a vital part of your great team there at WTTS and I'm certain he will be missed by not only your staff but his loyal listeners as well.
-Don
Being a transplant from California, I didn't know anything about Indiana radio. It was hard enough to find anything worth listening to back home, I didn't expect to find much better here. Then there was Phil. Rarely do you come across someone with a true love for his tunes. I'm truly bummed at hearing of his passing. Just as I was settling into his program, and gettin' comfy. Listening to your station won't be the same. Being a dad myself, my heart aches for his kid (not to mention his wife!). Phil was a heck of a radio guy! I only wish I'd gotten to know him.
-Jorge
I just wanted to say that I work two jobs, and the highlight of my work week was driving home on Monday night and listening to this special guy, Phil. He;ll be missed, my condolences to his loved ones........
-KO
My deepest sympathy goes out to Phil's family. He will be missed. I remember his first show. I thought it was so cool that WTTS let a listener host a show and he did a great job. Monday nights just won't be the same. WTTS - what a great job to have the party for Phil - I'm sure there are allot of us listeners who would like to say goodbye.
-Jane
I heard about phil on my drive home on Monday night. I listened to the Laura's hour non-commercial dedication spot, really gave it alot of thought, and wanted to say, I am very sorry to hear about his passing. I believe we met on one occasion, hell, I think he introduced us at the KWS show @ the Music Mill. As a musician, It's sad to hear that a dedicated music listener has passed. If it wasn't for people like Phil, there would would be no music. Give my best to his family and friends.
-Max Allen
I am a friend of Phil. Although we have only known each other for a little less than 2 years, we became very good friends. We attended several shows together and also met regularly for beers at the Moondog Tavern. One aspect of Phil that I feel needs a mention is the man's epic sense of humour. I especially enjoyed Phil's BAD days. He had a very unique and creative use of language on those days that never ceased to amuse and amaze me. He would get me laughing so hard that I would sometimes have trouble catching by breath. Also, Phil had a Fieldsian sense of humour regarding funny sounding names. He kept a list of these names, all real people that he would read about in the paper or hear about in other media forms, and one time read the entire list to me. Keep looking for the list Reed. I will sign this with a variation of one of the names. Fare thee well my good friend, I hope to see you again some day.

I listened to every single show of Phil's as I monitor WTTS for a radio monitoring service. I have to listen to alot of jocks across the country and his show really was one of the best shows I came across. Every now and then he would stump me on a title but was real prompt in answering my email. He turned me on to some great new and old artists. I commend WTTS for letting him have his own show. Not very many stations allow somewhat of a free form style like that. Kind of even wished he
was on once a week as opposed to only once a month. He will be missed. My regards to his family.
-Anna
What a sad tragedy for his family and the tts listeners. Great show! Made me look forward to Monday's. Always something new and refreshing. And how totally cool that he got his show by being a pest! I love it! We'll miss you Phil. Prayers are with your family.
-Becky
We were saddened to learn about the passing of Phil. While we have moved out of the Indy area, we still listen to your station online. He had a wonderful personality and will be greatly missed. His family is in our prayers.
-Emily
I was shocked and saddened to learn of Phil’s passing. I was a fan of his various music tastes and had the pleasure of meeting him at the Music Mill last fall during the ALO concert. It is another reminder of the frailty of life. He will be missed.
-John
Phil will be greatly missed. HIs musical taste was very similar to my own, so it was a pleasure having him DJ fo r the station. Blessings to his family, friends and all the listeners who appreciated him tremendously.
-Susan
My deepest condolences go out to Phil's family & friends, including all of his fans whose lives he touched. I consider myself lucky to be part of that group. I look forward to meeting up with him again one day on the other side.
-Brad
Phil befriended me back in 1977 or so. I haven't seen him in 20 years, but I am saddened by his passing, and will miss him. He was possessed of an urbane wit and a sardonic charm. I remember him as a man of large appetites - but not indiscriminate appetites. He was most selective. And of course, he always had good taste in music. I was a little surprised to find out he had a DJ gig, but, really, I shouldn't have been surprised at all. I used to joke with him that - with his distinctive looks and melodious baritone - he was missing his calling as a character actor in Hollywood. I can see he didn't miss his calling at all.
